BROOKLYN, N.Y. - December 4, 2018 - The Pratt Institute men's basketball team fell to visiting opponent, the College of New Rochelle, 101-56, on Tuesday evening at the ARC. First-year Griffin Levine (Dallas, Tex.) led the Cannoneers with 17 points in the setback, while classmate David Sleziak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored a career-high nine points. Senior guard Bubby Vernon (Boulder, Col.) notched 10 points, his fifth time scoring double-digits in seven games this season.
With the loss, Pratt moves to 4-3, while the Blue Angels improve to 3-3. New Rochelle saw 13 players score in the victory, paced by Justin Rivera with 20, and Hunter Schenkel with 15.
The Blue Angels connected on six of their first nine shots of the game to jump out to a 12-2 lead in the game's first three minutes and nine seconds, forcing the Cannoneers to call a timeout. Pratt responded with a 8-4 run, punctuated by a Levine three-pointer with 14:41 to go in the first half that cut their deficit to 16-10.
New Rochelle would stretch their lead to 31-14 at the 8:52 mark with an Elijah Robinson layup, adding to their 15-4 run. The Blue Angels lead would grow to 20 after Schenkel finished in the paint, 39-19 with 4:38 remaining in the first half, and head coach Max Sass calling another timeout for Pratt.
Back-to-back trifectas by Levine and Eric Jeon (Woodcliff Lake, N.J.) would cut New Rochelle's lead to 46-27 with 2:45 to go in the half, before the Blue Angels closed out the stanza on a 10-4 run to take a 56-31 lead into halftime.
New Rochelle shot 52.2% from the floor and forced the Cannoneers into 14 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes of play.
Finishes in the paint by Hamza Hamdeh (Brooklyn, N.Y) and Tytus Millikan (Winnemucca, Nev.) would pull Pratt within 28 at 65-37 with 14:14 left in regulation, and force New Rochelle to call a timeout. Following the break in action, the Blue Angels erupted for a 23-3 run over the next six-plus minutes to take their largest lead of the game, 88-40.
Kyle Felix finished a layup to break the century-mark for New Rochelle with 1:06 remaining to close out the scoring for the game, 101-56.
The Cannoneers finished the game shooting 21-57 (36.8%) from the field, including 7-24 (29.2%) from beyond the arc.
Up Next: Pratt Institute will take on Webb Institute on Friday, December 7, in Glen Cove, Long Island at 8:30 PM. The Cannoneers won the previous meeting on November 27, 80-41.
