GLEN COVE, N.Y. - December 7, 2018 - The Pratt Institute men's basketball team relied on its team defense to pull away from Webb Institute, 53-34, on Friday night on the campus of Webb Institute.
With the win, the Cannoneers improved their record to 5-3, while the Webbies remain winless on the year. In a game where both teams shot under 30% from the field, Pratt won the rebounding battle, 53-48, and had 14 assists on 21 made field goals.
Bubby Vernon (Boulder, CO) led all players with 15 points to go along with six rebounds, and four steals in 21 minutes of action. Akil Philip (Queens, NY) was a dominant inside presence, finishing with 10 points and and 14 rebounds, for his fifth double-double of the season.
The Webbies were held to just 13 points in the second half and for the game, were forced into 17 turnovers, resulting in 14 points for the Cannoneers.
In the opening 10 minutes and 21 seconds, there were four lead changes, as neither team could create any separation. Vernon nailed a jumper with 9:31 to play in the first to regain the lead, 12-11, and then scored a layup off a steal to give Pratt a 14-13 lead. To end the first half, the Cannoneers went on a 12-6 run, including six points from Griffin Levine (Dallas, TX), to give the visitors a 28-21 lead heading into the locker room.
Vernon continued his scoring tear in the second half, finishing in the paint with 14:10 remaining, to extend the lead, 39-25. From 7:17 to 4:42, three different Cannoneers nailed three pointers, Tytus Millikan (Winnemucca, NV), Philip, and the last one by Vernon, pushing the lead to 52-34. Eric Jeon (Woodcliff Lake, NJ) would sink a free throw with 3:28 left to close out the scoring for the game, 53-34.
