QUEENS, NY – The Cannoneers of Pratt Institute saw their season come to an end in the semifinals of the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament following a 5-1 defeat to the Webb Institute.
"I give Webb total credit for playing solid tennis, especially in doubles action," said head coach David Eddy.
The Cannoneers' (5-6, 3-1 HVIAC) top tandem of Ben Erickson and Simon Salazar were bested by Webb's Oscar Como and Duane Lee 8-5 to open the match. Webb made it 2-0 following their victory in No. 2 doubles over Pratt's Hubert Chen and Johnson Meng. The lone bright spot for Pratt was the victory in No. 3 doubles as Aris Azarmsa and Taeyoung Chang secured the point with an 8-5 decision.
Despite the setback in the final doubles flight, Webb would control singles action. With victories in No. 2, 5, and 6 singles, the third-seeded Webbies stunned the Cannoneers to claim their spot in the finals.
Webb would go on to beat Culinary 5-4 in the finals to claim their first-ever HVIAC Championship.
Following the tournament, several Cannoneers received post season accolades for their outstanding seasons.
Pratt's Ben Erickson, a three-time Player of the Week recipient this season, was named the conference Player of the Year. Pratt junior Aris Azarmsa was awarded Rookie of the Year accolades by the HVIAC, while Erickson and Simon Salazar were named to the All-HVIAC team.
"Congrats to Ben and Aris on being named player and rookie of the year, respectively," added Eddy "Both are solid competitors with great attitudes."
