CHESTNUT HILL, M.A. - January 5, 2019 - Four student-athletes registered at least seven points as the Pratt Institute women's basketball team returned to action in 2019 with a balanced attack, as the Cannoneers bested Pine Manor College, 56-48, on Saturday afternoon in Brunelli Court.
With the victory, Pratt is now 4-2 for the season, while the Gators fall to 1-9. The black and yellow owned a 58-44 advantage on the glass while scoring 19 second chance points to Pine Manor's two.
The Cannoneers were led by junior guard Emily Guerra (Babylon, N.Y.), who recorded her fifth double-double, with 21 points and 18 rebounds. First-year guard Kinako Miyake (San Mateo, Cali.) poured in 12 points, while Idalia Kaplan (Seattle, Wash.) notched eight points and 16 rebounds, and Amissa Epperson (Jersey City, N.J.) posted seven points to go along with six boards.
Pratt fell behind early, as the hosts jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the game's first four minutes. At 5:59 in the first quarter, Anna Seminara (Lancaster, Penn.) made a layup to put the Cannoneers on the board. A jumper by Guerra with 1:52 in the opening frame tied the score at 11-11, and Kaplan's layup with 50 seconds to go tied the score again, 13-13.
47 seconds into the 2nd quarter, a three-pointer from Miyake gave the Cannoneers their first lead of the game, 16-13. Free throws from Guerra at the 7:10 mark pushed the Pratt lead to 20-15 but an inside finish from Pine Manor's Kiana Wilkerson tied the game at 20 with 4:22 remaining in the first half. A layup by Kaplan extended the lead to 26-22 with 2:45 to go, and the hosts scored in the paint at 2:08 to close out the scoring for the opening half, 26-24.
In the third quarter, Guerra's jumper at 3:58 gave Pratt its biggest lead of the game, 35-28, and after the Gators would storm back to tie the game, 35-35, with with 1:56 left in the third period, the Cannoneers responded with a 7-0 run of their own to end the quarter, with Miyake burying a triple as time expired, 42-35.
Epperson's inside finish with 4:37 remaining in the game extended the Pratt lead to 50-41, and forced the hosts to call a timeout. With 1:55 to go, Guerra would nail a three-pointer to make it 54-43, and 55 seconds later, Epperson would score again in the paint to close out the scoring for the Cannoneers, 56-45. A made three from the Gators' Kristen Harris with 48 seconds remaining would cut the lead to 56-48 but that was the last scoring for either side, as the Pratt defense was able to close the game out.
Up Next: The Cannoneers will travel to Delhi, New York on Tuesday, January 8, to take on SUNY Delhi. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
