NEWARK, N.J. - September 6, 2018 - The Pratt Institute women's volleyball team suffered their first road defeat of the 2018 season on Thursday night to Rutgers University-Newark in three sets in The Golden Dome.
The Scarlet Knights won the match with scores of 25-14, 25-11, and 25-18.
With the loss, the Cannoneers fall to 1-2, while the Scarlet Knights improve to 2-1.
Pratt fell behind early in the match, as the hosts pushed their lead to 15-7, following a kill from Rutgers junior Comfort Akinbo. The Cannoneers answered back with four-straight points, lead by freshman right side, Madeline Markley, but Newark regained control of the set and finished on a 10-3 run to earn the 1-0 advantage.
Despite taking the first two points of the second set, Pratt struggled to get in a rhythm as they eventually fell 25-11.
In the third set, head coach Louis Sepulveda's group found themselves again with an early lead, up 4-1, behind the play of freshman libero, Avery Toomes. After Newark tied the score at 6-6, Pratt rattled off 6 straight points, in large part to Markley having three service aces during the run.
The Cannoneers took their last lead of the set at 15-14, with a kill from Emelen Mikelic from Toomes. The home team regained the lead and eventually won the game, and the match.
Markley lead Pratt with four kills, and five aces, while Toomes chipped in with five assists, Mikelic finished with five digs, and libero, Hannah Lee lead the team with eight digs.
Up Next: The Cannoneers will be on the road again as they travel to Mount Holyoke (MA) Saturday, September 8th, to play Newbury College at 1:00 PM and Mount Holyoke at 3:00 PM.
