QUEENS -- Pratt Institute suffered its first loss of 2013, dropping two of three doubles points as Purchase State edged out a 5-4 win Wednesday night in a chilly, three-hour, thirty-minute marathon at the USTA National Tennis Center.
Purchase's (4-1) Angela Assal (Bronx, NY/HSME) and Jasmine Rippey (Deansboro, NY/Clinton) handed Pratt's Agata Jakkubowska and Sarah Conant their first loss in eight matches, 8-4, in No. 1 singles. Assal handed Jakubowska her first loss of the season in No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-2 win over the Pratt freshman.
The Cannoneers (7-1) No. 2 team of Whitney Mills (Rocky River, OH/Rocky River) and Gabriella Guerra (Littleton, CO/Heritage) improved to 6-0 with an 8-0 win over the Panthers Katherine Coleman and Juliette Ferraro. The Panthers took an 8-0 third singles win, as Emma Yavel (Brooklyn, NY/Murrow) and Lily Murray (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) ousted Pratt's Rachel Caires and Janet Lee.
Guerra, meanwhile, moved to 7-0 in singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Anna Palmer.
At 7-1 on the season, Pratt returns to play on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in non-conference play at York College.
