Freshman Jakubowska, veterans lead Cannoneers to 2-0 with 8-1 win at John Jay

FLUSHING MEADOWS, QUEENS -- Pratt Institute knocked off John Jay College 8-1 Wednesday night in non-conference women's tennis play at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

The Cannoneers were again led by reigning Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletics Conference Rookie of the Week Agata Jakubowska, who earned a 6-0, 6-1 win in No. 1 singles play over Armine Kurkjain. Jakubowska teamed with junior Sarah Conant for an 8-1 win over the team of Kurkjain and Gabby Baez 8-1 in first singles play. 

Conant, meanwhile, improved to 2-0 in No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Baez.

Cannoneers veterans enjoyed success throughout the card, as senior Rachel Caires moved to 2-0 in No. 3 singles by besting Precious Riddick, 6-0, 6-3. In her first match of 2013, senior Whitney Mills earned a 6-2, 6-1 win in No. 4 singles over India Morina. Junior Gabriella Guera and senior Janet Lee both picked up their first wins of the season out of the fifth and sixth spots, respectively, also in straight sets.

The Cannoneers return to the court on Sunday at 1 p.m., continuing the non-conference play against Kean College.
