BROOKLYN, NY – Top-seeded Pratt Institute defeated No. 2 seed Vaughn College 5-0 to win the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's tennis championship on Sunday evening at the Pratt ARC.
For the Cannoneers, it is their sixth league title in the last seven years for the Cannoneers, including the previous two. The victory capped a perfect conference season for Pratt as the Cannoneers swept through their HVIAC schedule for the second straight season.
As it has been all season long, the No. 1 double tandem of Amanda Twu and Melanie Kania set the pace for Pratt after recording an unblemished 8-0 victory in the championship's first flight. Maia Schlussel and Caroline Madden followed with an 8-2 win in No. 2 doubles, while Morgan Ferweda and Huize Wu completed the sweep of doubles with an 8-0 win.
With a comfortable 3-0 cushion after doubles play, the Cannoneers turned their attention to singles play and continued their impressive performance. Freshman Maia Schlussel won via a walk over by Vaughn in No. 3 singles, giving Pratt a 4-0 advantage. No.1 singles standout Amanda Twu delivered the decisive point following her 8-0 victory over Vaughn's Maia Rivers. Having claimed victory, the remaining singles matches went unfinished, although Melanie Kania, Caroline Madden, Morgan Ferweda and Huize Wu all held substantial leads in their respective matches.
Following the match, Pratt's Morgan Ferweda and Melanie Kania were awarded the conference's Rookie and Player of the Year awards, while head coach David Eddy was named top coach for the second consecutive year.
The Cannoneers conclude 2017 with a 7-3 record.
