PURCHASE, NY – The Pratt Institute women's tennis team dropped a tough non-conference dual match, 6-3, to Purchase College on Saturday morning. With the results, the Cannoneers fall to 0-3 on the season, while the Panthers improve their mark to 2-1.
As doubles play began, Pratt's No. 1 duo of Melanie Kania and Neeka Gilardian helped the visitors secure the first point of play with a 9-7 victory. The combination of Cory Marks and Maia Schlussel battled back and forth in No. 2 doubles before losing a tough 8-6 decision. The Panthers would win the remaining doubles flight to take a 2-1 advantage heading into singles action.
After losing the first set 6-4, Melanie Kania regrouped and took the second set 6-2 and the tie breaker 10-2 to take the match. However, Purchase would seal the victory by taking the next three matches.
Despite the team defeat, the performance of No. 5 singles player Caroline Madden, pleased the coaching staff. After being unable to practice all week because of illness, Madden earned her second singles win of the season, downing Purchase's Amelia Rothbell (6-2, 2-6, 6-1).
Up Next: The Cannoneers have a quick turnaround as they welcome the Broncos from SUNY-Delhi to Brooklyn tomorrow afternoon. A 1:00 pm start time is scheduled.
