Sharing much of her life with horses, Kathryn’s had the great, good fortune to have had three amazing and beautiful Thoroughbred mares and, now, an amazing and beautiful Irish Sport Horse mare. She brings this life-long love of horses and her experience as a certified sports massage therapist, along with her significant teaching and administrative experience at Pratt, to her dual role as Pratt Equestrian’s Associate Head Coach & Faculty Advisor
As Associate Head Coach, Kathryn acts as Head Coach with any matters relating to the team within Pratt and as Pratt’s official representative of the team. She’s responsible for recruiting Equestrian athletes who can meet Pratt’s academic admissions standards and sustain or enhance the competitiveness of the program; for working with the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) on athletes’ correct competition-level enrollments and show entries, and for tracking each athlete’s progression through the IHSA competition levels; for coordinating and overseeing the team’s community service and fundraising; for overseeing that athletes engage in required unmounted workouts; for coordinating with Pratt’s Head Athletic trainer for documentation and appropriate care of injuries; for managing all of the team’s official and public-facing communications; for traveling with the team to practices and shows to assist and act as Pratt’s representative there; and generally acting as the coaching point-of-contact for athletes between practices and shows.
The IHSA also requires that the team have a Faculty Advisor in addition to their major-department advisor, to support the academic success of student-athletes, to monitor their academic performance, and to certify that they remain GPA eligible to compete. Kathryn is uniquely qualified to do this; at Pratt, her roles have included:
- Assistant Chair of the Humanities & Media Studies Department
- Coordinator of both the Humanities Core and Writing Across the Curriculum Programs
- Committee co-chair during Pratt’s two most recent re-accreditations with the Middle States Commission on Higher Education
- Committee co-chair for the Student Success Pillar of Pratt’s current Strategic Plan
As a member of the faculty as well as an Athletics’ Department Coach, Kathryn currently serves as the chair of Pratt’s Academic Integrity Standing Committee and teaches courses in the Humanities & Media Studies Department. With all this varied experience within Pratt, Kathryn is well able to advise students as they balance their athletics and academics – and when high school students express interest in Pratt and the team, she’s able to fully answer any and all question about academics, as well as what it would be like to ride on the team.
