Anthony Macapugay was named Pratt Institute Associate Director of Athletics in October 2022.
No stranger to Clinton Hill, Macapugay brings nearly two decades of experience to Pratt and joined from St. Joseph's University (Brooklyn) where he was assistant director of athletics for communications and operations. "I am really excited to have Anthony join our team as we continue to grow our department," commented Director of Athletics Walter Rickard. "He is very well respected within the NYC athletic scene and has a familiarity with Pratt in his former role as HVIAC SID."
In his new role for the Institute, Macapugay will oversee all compliance and communications efforts for the department's 15 sports and 165 student-athletes. In addition, he will serve as sport administrator for the men's and women's volleyball, men's soccer and men's basketball teams.
"I'm grateful for the opportunity to join Pratt at this exciting time in their first full year of NCAA membership," remarked Macapugay. "The department has seen tremendous growth under Walter's leadership and I look forward to contributing to taking Pratt to the next level."
"Anthony also stood out for his experience in the transition of St. Joseph's to NCAA membership," added Rickard. "He has a unique knowledge and experience that I believe will help us build our programs in size and competitiveness."
While at St. Joseph's, Macapugay was responsible for all the media relations and communications efforts, generating written, graphical, and video content for the athletics website and social media accounts. He oversaw game day operations for all home contests, scheduling student event staff and serving as a game administrator. He helped produce a high-quality video stream for home games, including those held at various off-campus venues utilized for outdoor sports.
Macapugay served as sport administrator for several sports providing oversight for their continued success. He sat on the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Regional Advisory Committee and served as the NCAA site representative for the opening rounds of the 2020 NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship at The University of Scranton.
Outside of St. Joseph's, Macapugay also worked as Director of Sports Information and Championships for the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference — Pratt's former conference — from 2009 to 2022. In addition to coordinating the weekly awards and managing the conference website, he executed the championship tournaments for all league sports and oversaw the league's budget as treasurer.
After several years as a game day event staff and two years part-time as sports information coordinator, the north Brooklyn native joined St. Joseph's full-time in 2008 at the beginning of their NCAA Division III provisional process and helped the department attain full membership on schedule in 2012. He later contributed to the construction of The Hill Center — the University's first on-campus athletic facility located on Vanderbilt Avenue — assisting with many of the design and branding elements for the state-of-the-art 40,000 square-foot, LEED-certified facility which opened its doors in 2014.
Former students and interns he has trained and mentored have been highly regarded in the collegiate athletics industry and have gone on to hold head or assistant positions in sports information/athletic communications or game day event staff for institutions of all levels of the NCAA.
Macapugay is a game night statistician for the Brooklyn Nets and New York Liberty as well as college basketball games and tournaments at the Barclays Center. He has also worked as a statistician and public address announcer for numerous colleges in the metropolitan area.
He received his bachelor's degree in management with a concentration in computer science, cum laude, from Boston College in 2000. A lifelong Kings County resident, he still lives in Brooklyn with his wife Jaclyn and their two-year-old daughter Emma.
