Volleyball misses chance to get back to .500 with 3-0 loss at York

JAMAICA, NY -- With a chance to mount its first three-match winning streak of the season and pull back to the .500 mark, the Cannoneers mustered only a .022 attack percentage in the team's 3-0 non-conference road loss to York College Saturday afternoon.

Pratt's Hannah Calderwood continued her stellar play, leading all players with 10 digs and two solo blocks while pacing the visitors with eight kills. Inserted in the setter spot for the first time all year, fellow freshman Joan Wyeth handed out 13 assists. Senior Diana Lezama tied for match-high honors with 10 digs, adding four kills with only one error for a team-high .176 hitting percentage, but the Cannoneers never hit better than .125 in any set in falling to 6-8 on the year.

A 6-1 Pratt run late in the first found the Cannoneers within a point at 22-21, but a York kill, ace and solo block closed out the Cardinals 25-21 Game 1 win. A Calderwood kill put Pratt on top 7-6 in Game 2, but a 5-0 mid-set run gave the Cardinals the lead for good. York then scored eight of the last nine points of the set starting with two Kiranjeet Kaur service aces to win 25-14.

Pratt looked poised to get back in the match by taking a 5-0 lead to open Game 3 with Wyeth at serve, but York chipped away, using a Wyeth ball handling error to close out a 4-0 run that erased the Cardinals deficit for good at 11-10. Pratt would tie the set again at 15-15 thanks to a York ball handling error, but the Cardinals scored six of the last nine to pull away with a 25-19 win

As a team, York hit .216 in improving to 4-14 on the season.

Pratt returns to play Monday night at home at 7:30 p.m. with a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff berth at stake. A win over 2-17 Sarah Lawrence locks Pratt into the fourth and final playoff spot, while a win for the Gryphons keeps the team in the hunt for the No. 4 spot.
