New Rochelle blanks women's volleyball

BROOKLYN -- The College of New Rochelle used 7-0 runs in each of the first two games and an 11-0 Game 3 run to best the Cannoneers 3-0 Tuesday night in Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's volleyball play.

Blue Angles junior Meghan King (New City, NY/Clarkstown North) threw down a match-best 11 kills to go along with 10 digs, and Tiany Perez Diaz (Juncos, PR/Notre Dame High) paced three New Rochelle players in double figures with a match-high17 digs as the visitors moved to 8-7 overall and 2-0 in HVIAC play.

For the Cannoneers, freshman Charlotte Burch (Lawrence, KS/Bishop Seabury) led the way with four service aces, and HVAIC Player of the Week Alli Houghton (Allentown, PA/Emmaus) handed out nine assists in the loss.

A Diana Lezama (Bethesda, MD/Hotchkiss) kill got the Cannoneers on the board with the first points of the night, but with a share of first place in the HVIAC at stake, the Blue Angels wasted no time in taking control. A pair of King kills with Marissa Armstrong (Scottsdale, AZ/Paradise Valley) serving sparked New Rochelle's 7-0 run in the team's 25-15 Game 1 win.

With Game 2 knotted at 7-7, a Hannah Calderwood (Clinton, WA/South Whidbey) kill on a feed from Houghton pulled the Cannoneers on top 8-7, but a 7-0 Blue Angles run aided by four Pratt errors distanced New Rochelle in its 25-11 win.

Lezama and Burch combined on a block assist in Game 3, putting the Cannoneers on top 2-1, and with Pratt leading 11-10, three of Armstrong's match-best five services aces ignited an 11-0 New Rochelle run that sealed the visitors' 25-13 win.

On the attack the Blue Angels hit .151 on the night, while Pratt was held to a -.116 attack percentage.

Pratt (3-3, 1-2 HVIAC) returns to play on Thursday at 8 p.m. at Lehman College, while New Rochelle (8-7, 2-0 HVIAC) plays host to Medgar Evers in HVIAC action on Thursday.
