BRONXVILLE, NY -- Cannoneers center Khari Jones totaled season highs of 18 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks, but Pratt Institute fell to host Sarah Lawrence College, 64-49, Friday night in non-conference men's basketball play.
The freshman led all players in scoring, boards and blocks, hitting an efficient 8-17 from the floor. Fellow first-year Andrew Yaglenski added 13 points and six rebounds on 4-10 shooting, connecting on a season-high 3-4 from three-point range.
A game after cashing in on 10-12 free throws (83 percent) in Pratt's loss to St. Joseph's, free throw shooting was the difference on Friday, as the team took advantage of only 12-27 (44 percent) trips to the stripe in the 15-point loss.
Sarah Lawrence's Mat Gerak scored six straight in under two minutes midway through the first to take a 19-8 lead and Sarah Lawrence led by seven or more the remainder of the half. A Gryphons layup from Andre Garebaldi with 13 seconds remaining sent Sarah Lawrence into the locker room leading 36-25.
Jones led Pratt with seven points and six rebounds, and Gerak came off the bench for eight points to lead all players through halftime.
The Gryphons momentum carried over after the break, as Sarah Lawrence scored seven of the first nine points of the second in taking a 43-27 lead at the 15:00 mark, and the Cannoneers never again came within 14. A Mailin Segal three-pointer with 5:26 to play gave the home team its first 20-point lead, and Sarah Lawrence closed out its alumni weekend game with a 64-49 win, improving to 1-3.
Paced by Jones' mammoth effort on the glass, and eight boards from junior Ari Grant, Pratt outrebounded the Gryphons 44-42, but Sarah Lawrence's depth led to 42 bench points compared to 15 for the Cannoneers, 13 from Yaglenski.
Gerak led the Gryphons with 15 points on the night.
At 2-3 (0-2 HVIAC), Pratt returns to the ARC to play host to The New School in non-league play Monday night at 6:30.
