BROOKLYN -- Cannoneers men's volleyball improved to 4-2 in its inaugural season in a 3-0 win over visiting Webb Friday night at the Pratt ARC.
Freshman David Cutler led all players with 15 kills on 34 attempts for a .324 hitting percentage, and Alex Arovski hit .278 for the Cannoneers, which put forth its second-best offensive effort of the season with a .211 attack as a team.
An Andreas Haji-Georgi block assist followed by a Haji-Georgi kill put Pratt on top 5-4 in the opening set before a Brian Mills kill capped a Webbies run that swung the visitors on top 12-8. Pratt responded with a 5-0 run closed out by an ace and kill from Arsovski that gave the Cannoneers a 13-12 lead, and a Cutler ace before an Arovski kill extended the margin to 21-15 in Pratt's 25-17 Game 1 win.
Aces were wild in the middle set, as a pair of Arsovski aces sent the home team up 3-0 in the second before back-to-back Haji-Georgi aces increased the lead to 7-2. Consecutive Matthew Valentine aces upped the margin to 7-2, and three Haji-Georgi aces in a row increased the lead to 24-11 in Pratt's 25-12 win.
The Cannoneers overcame an early six-point hole trailing 8-2 to take the closing set in overtime. After battling back and then failing to convert on match point at 24-23, Pratt quickly responded with a Cutler kill and a Connan Moody ace to close out the night with a 26-24 victory.
Led by five each from Haji-Georgi and Arsovski, Pratt totaled 18 aces to only four for Webb.
At 4-2 on the season, Pratt returns to play on March 23 with a home tri-match, taking on the Gators of Sage College at 1:00 before wrapping up 2014 against Yeshiva at 3:00.
