BROOKLYN -- Pratt Institute led 10-9 in the opening set before a 6-0 Privateers run set the tone in SUNY Maritime's 3-0 win Thursday night in non-conference women's volleyball play at the ARC.
Middle hitter Charlotte Burch led Pratt with seven kills and two solo blocks, while Abby Nagy handed out nine assists to go along with four digs.
For Maritime, Carly Lombardo led all players with 14 kills on 27 swings for a .370 attack percentage. Charlotte Acklin added six kills on 13 attack for a .308 percentage, and the Privateers totaled 11 service aces, four from Lombardo, allowing none for Pratt.
After a series of ties early in Game 1, Burch and Nagy combined for a block assists that gave Pratt its first lead at 10-9. Maritime answerd immediately in the form of a 6-0 run, with an Erika Bailey service ace leading to an Ashley Greene timeout with her Cannoneers down 17-11. In all, the Privateers orchestrated a 16-4 run in closing out a 25-13 opening set win.
Juniors Hannah Calderwood and Beryl Perron-Feller paired on a block assist that pulled Pratt within a point, 6-5, early in Game 2. The Privateers responded with at 7-0 run ignited by a Lombardo kill in going on top 13-5 in cruising to a 25-10 victory.
A Burch kill knotted Game 3 at 2-2 before back-to-back Lombardo kills capped a 5-0 Maritime run in giving the Privateers some breathing run ahead 8-3. Maritime took its first double-digit lead at 21-11 before five straight Cannoneers points sparked by a Calderwood kill cut the margin in half at 21-16, but four straight for the visitors culminating in a Bailey kill closed out a 25-16 Maritime win.
Lombardo fueled a Privateers (11-7) attack that hit .179 on the night, while Pratt (4-12) hit -.075.
The Cannoneers return to play Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at Sarah Lawrence College.
