Cannoneers win third set but York rebounds for 3-1 win

QUEENS -- Visiting Pratt Institute showed resiliancy down 2-0 by outlasting the Cardinals in the third set, but York held on for a 3-1 win Friday night in non-conference women's volleyball play.

Middle hitter Charlotte Burch led Pratt with a .200 attack percentage, knocking home six kills on 15 swings with three errors, but the Cannoneers hit -.031 as a team in the loss. Fellow junior Hannah Calderwood led Pratt with nine kills but totaled five errors over 25 attacks on the night.

After Pratt pulled within 13-11 in the opening set, Tiandra Jones and Shaunecia McClendon kills sparked a 12-4 Cardinals run to close out Game 1.

A Calderwood kill tied Game 2 at 6-6, but York scored nine of the set's final 13 points, including a pair of kills from Renee Daly, to finish out a 25-20 second set victory.

After a Daly kill had the Cardinals looking for a sweep ahead 6-2, two Joan Wyeth service aces fueled an 8-2 Pratt run that swung the Cannoneers in control 10-8. An Abby Nagy service ace found the Cannoneers ahead 20-15, and four York errors led to a Burch kill that capped a 25-22 win.

A Joanna Yeung kill and Cardinals error continued Pratt's momentum, as the Cannoneers came out to a 6-1 lead in the fourth set. Two McClendon service aces ignited a 5-0 run that tied the set at 7-7, but seven Pratt errors and three Daly service aces in an 11-0 York run distanced the hosts in the Cardinals 25-14 run.

Pratt returns to play Saturday at the College of New Rochelle in a tri-match against the host Blue Angels and Davis College starting at 10:00 a.m.
