HARRISBURG, PA – Sophomore forward Katherine Shan (Palo Alto, CA/Palo Alto Senior) and senior midfielder Megan Lighty (Vienna, VA/Juan Diego Catholic) each scored a pair of goals leading Pratt Institute women's soccer to a 5-0 victory over Central Penn College Saturday afternoon.
With the victory, the Cannoneers improved to 2-0 in the first season since women's soccer returned as an intercollegiate offering. Central Penn fell to 1-3-1.
"Today was an excellent display of how this young team can adjust to a variety of conditions," said head coach Jonas Worth. "The staff was concerned that a rainy away game on grass would affect our game plan but the athletes made some quick adjustments in order to excel on the different surface."
Sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Holub (Raleigh, NC/Cardinal Gibbons) and classmate Courtney Dreher (Troy, NY/Tamarac) combined for nine saves to keep Central Penn off the score sheet, including a spectacular nab of a Central Penn penalty kick by Holub, which would have given Central Penn an early 1-0 lead.
"Holub's penalty save was a massive wakeup call for the team and we responded immediately at the other end," Worth added.
After Holub's heroics, Shan put the Cannoneers on the board less than five minutes later, tallying her third goal of the season in the 13th minute. The forward has collected four goals over Pratt's first two games.
Jen Klockner (Hamilton, NJ/Steinart) extended the Pratt lead to two with an unassisted goal in the 20th minute. Lighty would double the Cannoneers' lead, scoring back-to-back goals over a nine-minute span to close out the first half.
Shan provided that game's final margin, registering an unassisted goal in the 61st minute for her second goal of the game.
Pratt controlled play for most of the game, outshooting Central Penn 30-9. Holub paired with classmate Courtney Dreher (Troy, NY/Tamarac) to post a second straight shutout for the Cannoneers.
Up Next: The Cannoneers return to Pennsylvania for a doubleheader with the University of Valley Forge on October 15. Women's soccer takes to the pitch first with a 1:00 p.m. kickoff and men's soccer follows at 3:00 p.m. It will be the final soccer doubleheader of the 2016 season.
