BROOKLYN -- Pratt Institute opened up a 10-point lead in the first 5:31 and cruised to a 93-70 win Thursday night in non-league men's basketball play at the ARC.
Andrew Yaglenski led all players with 22 points and four assists, and Ari Grant added 21 points and a team-high 10 rebounds on an efficient 9-11 shooting as the Cannoneers open the season 2-0.
Sophomore guard Bubby Vernon tossed in 18 points on 4-14 shooting, also handing out four assists, and Akil Philip hit on 5-10 from the floor for his 14 points, playing a team-high 34 minutes.
Grant's steal at midcourt and two-handed throw-down landed Pratt its first double-digit lead at 14-4, and a Philip tip-in upped the margin to 18-4 at the 13:29 mark. Vernon's first of three triples at the 11:36 point marked the Cannoneers largest lead of the half at 27-8.
The Narwhals scored 10 of the final 14 in the frame, with a Baiheng Chen layup trimming the lead to 39-33 before Pratt responded with a 17-3 run to take a comfortable 53-36 lead into the intermission.
Yaglenski and Philips treys sparked a 10-0 run out of the break, putting the game out of reach for good. Eric Jeon's layup at the 15:09 mark extended the lead to 30, 72-42. Grant's three-point play extended the lead to 82-51, and the hosts prevailed 93-70.
On the night, Pratt shot 51 percent from the floor, holding the Narwhals to 40 percent shooting.
For New School, Benjamin Irving paced five scorers in double figures with 16 points, adding a game-high 14 rebounds.
Pratt returns to play December 1 at 8:30, playing host to Touro College in non-conference play.
