Knights 15-0 run dooms Cannoneers in setback to Berkeley

BROOKLYN – A 15-0 run out of halftime distanced Berkeley College in its 71-50 win over Pratt Institute Thursday night in Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball play at the Pratt ARC.

Senior Anna Bryce totaled 12 points with team-highs of nine rebounds and six assists. Sophomore Amissa Epperson added 12 points, eight rebounds, and a game-best three blocks, and freshman Idalia Kaplan also tied for team-high honors with 12 points and nine rebounds.

An Emily Guerra jumper from the left elbow gave Pratt its only lead at 3-2, and a Jen Klockner layup tied the contest at 19-19 with 18 seconds left in the first quarter. Berkeley led for the entire second quarter, closing the frame on a Baytiana Newman layup that capped an 8-2 run as the Knights took a 42-33 lead into halftime.

Berkeley's momentum carried over out of the intermission, with back-to-back Newman baskets sparking a 15-0 run out of the break, extending the lead to 57-33. The guests led by 20 or more the rest of the way, holding Pratt to 27 percent (19-70) shooting on the night and going on to win 71-50.

Knights forward Janera Roper led all players with 28 points, 16 rebounds, and six steals as Berkeley (4-8, 2-2 HVIAC) out-rebounded the Cannoneers 60-49.

At halftime, Pratt announced the winner of its Cannoneers mascot naming contest. As a part of Pratt Athletics' rebranding, the Cannoneers new mascot was named Charlie, a name submitted by Pratt senior Helena Duncan in honor of Institute founder Charles Pratt. For her effort, Duncan was presented with a $250 MasterCard gift card by director of athletics Walter Rickard in the halftime ceremony.

At 4-5 and 1-1 in HVIAC play, Pratt hits the road for a pair of league contests this weekend, traveling to Davis College on Saturday and Albany College of Pharmacy on Sunday.
