Rocky first quarter stalls Cannoneers in setback to Panthers

ALBANY, NY -- The Panthers held Pratt Institute scoreless over the first 12:22 in Albany Pharmacy's 73-39 win over the visiting Cannoneers Sunday afternoon in Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play at Albert White Gymnasium.

The hosts held a 21-0 lead after the first quarter, in which Pratt shot 0-18. Danielle Griffin's jumper put the Panthers up 24-0, before back-to-back baskets from  Anna Bryce and Emily Guerra starting  pulled the Cannoneers to with 20. Sophomore forward AimeeLyn Miller scored seven points, including consecutive three-pointers, in a 9-2 Cannoneers run to close the half, trimming the 24-point deficit to 15, at 39-24. 

Pratt's momentum extended into a 15-2 run thanks to two Amissa Epperson putbacks to start the half, and a Guerra jumper trimmed the margin to single digits at 34-25. The Panthers swung back, answering with a 16-2 run to go on top 50-27. Pratt briefly pulled to within 19 early in the fourt, but Albany Pharmacy held the Cannoneers scoreless over the final 5:20 in prevailing 73-39. 

Miller and Epperson tied for team high honors with nine points each, the latter adding 13 rebounds and a game-high five blocks before fouling out. Sabrina Barakat came off the bench of six points on 2-4 shooting over 10 minutes, but Pratt shot just 24 percent (16-68) from the field in being held to a season-low 39 points. 

For the Panthers (9-8, 4-0 HVIAC), Dannie Griffin led all players with 20 points and 22 rebounds. 

With a fourth straight loss, the Cannoneers fall to 4-6 overall and 2-5 in HVIAC play. Pratt returns to play at home on Thursday against Sarah Lawrence College. In the teams' last meeting, the Cannoneers knocked off the Gryphons 89-30 in Bronxville.
