BROOKLYN, N.Y. - October 11, 2018 - The Pratt Institute women's volleyball team bested the College of St. Elizabeth in four sets in their matchup in the ARC building on Thursday night. The Cannoneers won by the scores of 25-14, 15-25, 25-21, 25-19.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Pratt as the Cannoneers evened their record at 10-10. The Eagles dropped to 7-12.
Madeline Markley stuffed her stat sheet with a career-high 14 digs, to go along with nine kills, and five aces, which ties her career-best. Emelen Mikelic put together a terrific showing on the outside, registering her first double-double of the season with 11 kills and 13 blocks. Badesim Julia Kubak handed out 35 assists and chipped in 10 digs, Shannon Corr tallied 12 kills and seven digs, and Ivana Santascoy totaled 13 digs and three aces. Pratt held St. Elizabeth to a hitting percentage of -.040 for the match, while they hit at a .142 clip, lead by Yessina Sanchez who finished with seven kills, at .538.
Pratt used tough serving to start the match and snag an early 14-5 advantage after back-to-back Markley aces. The Cannoneers would later put together a five-point burst, getting kills from Corr and Kubak to gain a 21-7 advantage. The Eagles would string together five straight points to cut the lead to 22-14, but two unforced errors by the visitors wrapped the first set at 25-14.
The second set featured four ties before St. Elizabeth responded at 14-14 with a trio of aces from Maura Farley, followed by three more points, to stretch their lead to 20-14. A kill from Corr would give Pratt its 15th and final point of the set, as the Eagles closed out the set on a five-point run, to win 25-15.
The Cannoneers stormed out to a 10-5 advantage in the third, following kills from Mikelic and Sanchez, forcing St. Elizabeth to call a timeout. Pratt would come out of the break continuing its surge, extending the lead to 13-5, after another kill by Markley. The Eagles found their stride in the middle of the set, and had their own run of seven consecutive points to bring the score to 13-12. The back and forth play continued, with Pratt taking a 22-15 lead, thanks to an ace by Kubak. St. Elizabeth clawed back to cut the lead to 24-21, before a kill from Mikelic ended the third set.
It was a competitive fourth set as the Eagles continued to fight back from deficits as large as eight. However, Pratt's offense hit at a .290 clip, as Kubak directed the hosts to 15 kills. Sanchez would elevate for a kill and then follow it up with an ace of her own to make it a 17-13 game in favor of the Cannoneers, but St. Elizabeth answered back and used a kill from Maryann Pacheco to close the gap to 22-19. The match would end a few plays later when Sanchez rose up for the kill.
Up Next: Pratt will travel the short distance to downtown Manhattan to face Cooper Union, on Friday, October 12. The match is scheduled to start at 7 PM.
