PURCHASE, N.Y. – September 29, 2018 - The Pratt Institute women's volleyball team knocked off Purchase College in a Saturday afternoon contest on the campus of Purchase. Pratt won the match, despite dropping the first set, 25-20, by taking the next three with the scores of 25-19, 27-25, 25-12.
The Cannoneers pushed its record to 6-6 while Purchase dropped to 2-6.
The visitors hit .103 for the match, with seven players having at least one kill. Shannon Corr led the way with a career-best 17 kills at a .213 clip, and added 10 digs as well, while Badesim Julia Kubak totaled four kills and 10 digs. Avery Toomes registered 33 assists and six aces and classmate Madeline Markley produced six kills and five digs.
Pratt used a four-point burst to begin the opening set, thanks to consecutive service aces from Toomes. The Cannoneers would take an 18-15 lead, following a kill by Emelen Mikelic, before the Panthers went on a 10-2 run to take the first set.
Early in the second set, back-to-back kills by Corr and Oliver Buika gave Pratt a 10-6 lead over the hosts. Corr remained dominant, stringing together a trio of unanswered kills to push the Cannoneers lead to 22-15. Another kill by Corr, followed by a service ace from Toomes gave Pratt the victory of the second set, 25-19.
The Cannoneers struggled to get into a rhythm in the third set and Purchase took advantage by seizing a 17-9 lead, before Pratt scored four straight points, highlighted by kills from Kubak and Cori Glidden, forcing the hosts to take a timeout. Out of the break, Pratt capitalized on mistakes from the Purchase side, before manufacturing a 10-3 run, with Glidden recording consecutive kills to lead the way, to win the set, 27-25.
Kills from Kubak and Buika extended the Pratt lead to at 14-7 in the fourth, and the Panthers would be unable to get any closer than six points the rest of the way. Corr would put the finishing touches on the night, with three kills and a service ace to wrap up the match, and the set, 25-12.
Up Next: The Cannoneers will host a quad-match in the Pratt ARC, featuring SUNY Delhi, the Culinary Institute of America, and The King's College (NY). The first slate of matchups is scheduled to begin at 10 AM.
