BROOKLYN, NY – Longtime Pratt Institute Coach and Student-Athlete, Tony Missere passed away on January 8 at the age of 72.
Missere attended Pratt as an undergrad student from 1965-68 and was a four-year member on the men's basketball team. In 1967, Missere averaged 21.7 rebounds per game, leading the nation.
Missere finished his playing career fourth all-time on the men's basketball scoring list with 1,769 points. He also holds the school record with 1,348 career rebounds.
After graduating from Pratt in 1968 with a degree in Dietetics and Hotel Management, Missere took his talents overseas to play professional basketball in Naples, Italy. While there, he was also the Aquatics Director at Camp All America.
Following his playing career, Missere returned to Pratt as a Facilities Manager, Instructor, Assistant Athletic Director and Head Men's Basketball and Baseball Coach. During the 1976-77 season, Missere was named Basketball Coach of the Year from the Knickerbocker Conference as well as Coach of the Year (College Division) from the Metropolitan Writers Association.
Missere served as President of the Metropolitan Coaches Association as well as the Knickerbocker Basketball Conference. From 1979-84, he served as a consultant to the Kingdom Saudi Arabia in Sports Club Management, Media Relations and Youth Programming for the 1984 Olympics.
More recently, Missere was the Chairperson and a full-time tenured associate professor of Sports Management at St. John's University.
Tony is survived by his ex-wife Mary (Lyle) Missere; daughter Nicole (Missere) Moriarty and her husband Terence; sons: Anthony Missere, III and his wife Paula, Peter Missere, and Phillip Missere and his wife Pamela; his grandchildren: Aaliyah, Charlotte, James, and Anthony IV; sister: Lorraine Werdann and her husband Bob; his nephew Robert and nieces Adrienne and Lorraine.
