NEW YORK – First-year Katherine Thomsen scored twice to reverse an early deficit and lead the Pratt Institute women's soccer team to a 2-1 triumph over SUNY College at Old Westbury on Monday evening at Randall's Island Park.
Now winners of three of their last four, the Cannoneers improve to 7-3 overall, improving on their winningest season since restarting the program in 2016.
Old Westbury (4-6-1) took to the offensive early and earned three early corners and one shot attempt that drew the woodwork. Nicole Abalco goal in the 19th minute put the visitors ahead 1-0.
But Pratt responded quickly with two shots from Siena Sujitno and Thomsen that prompted a save before Thomsen found the equalizer in the 22nd minute.
The NCAA Division III leading goal scorer struck again in the 29th minute for the eventual game-winner and her 22nd goal of the season.
The Panthers pressed for the equalizer in the second half and outshot Pratt 13-2, but the defense blocked two shots and keeper Emma Gaspari made six of her seven saves in the period to preserve the victory.
Thomsen fired five shots (four on goal) and Sujitno launched three shots, all on target. Ava Hunwick also picked up a shot for the gold and black.
Old Westbury finished with an 18-9 shot advantage and a 5-2 edge in corners in a losing effort.
Pratt has a day off before traveling to the Keystone State on Wednesday, October 12 to square off with Clarks Summit University with a 3 p.m. kickoff.
