Hunter Catches Up With Women's Basketball After Fast Start in Home Opener

Kylie Grant flirted with a triple-double as the Cannoneers raced out to an early nine-point lead on the Hawks.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Playing for the first time at the Activities Resource Center this season, the Pratt Institute women's basketball raced out to a nine-point lead on visiting Hunter College, but the Hawks left with an 88-54 victory on Wednesday evening.

Kylie Grant recorded her second double-double of the season with 19 points and a game-high 15 rebounds and falling two assists shy of a triple-double with eight. Niya Witherspoon added 13 points off the bench and grabbed four rebounds. Anabela Jakelic added eight points with as many boards and dished out five assists. Victoria Carvajal added seven points.

After Hunter (1-1) scored the game's opening basket, the Cannoneers assembled an 11-0 run for an 11-2 lead. Pratt logged their best shooting quarter of the season connecting on 9-for-18 and all nine field goals assisted – Jakelic handing out four dimes and Grant dishing out three – but Hunter came on strong late in the frame and knotted the period at 20-all.

The gold-and-black still remained close midway through the second stanza before a nearly four-minute scoring drought opened a 14-0 Hunter run for a 39-22 advantage. Pratt did well to close out the half strong on a 9-2 spurt to shrink the deficit to 41-31 heading into the lockers.

But Hunter came out strong in the second half and distanced themselves shooting 46 percent over the final 20 minutes while Pratt's connect rate slowed to 31 percent after a hot shooting 44 percent first half.

Hunter's Alexa Charles led all scorers and four Hawks in double figures with 25 points and six steals.

In a late addition to the schedule, Pratt hits the road again to face Berkeley College on Saturday, November 18 in a noon tilt at the City College of New York.
