Men’s Volleyball Streak Stopped by Lehman

BRONX, N.Y. — The Pratt Institute men's volleyball team couldn't extend their two-match winning streak falling to Lehman College in straight sets (25-21, 25-13, 25-23) on Tuesday evening at the APEX Gym.

Jason Raymond paced the Cannoneer attack with seven kills and added four digs and two blocks on the defensive end. Joji Kawamura chipped in five kills on a .222 hitting effort and brought up six digs. Devaun Longley and Max Wang added a trio of kills each, Longley hitting .333 and Wang bumping up a team-high eight digs.

Lehman raced out to a 6-1 lead to open the match but Pratt rallied to take a 11-9 lead and the squads remained separated by no more than two until the end with the Lightning closing out the frame on a 7-3 spurt. The hosts carried the momentum into the second stanza as Pratt was held to 13 points, before finding some life in the third. Pratt faced deficit as large as six, 15-9 and later at 19-13, but surged late and drew even at 21-all. After the set was knotted at 23-all, Lehman won the final two points to close out the straight-set win.

Alain Abreu Esteva led the Lightning with 11 kills while hitting .350. Ray Rodriguez had seven kills and a match-best nine digs.

Pratt (4-7) opens United East Conference play on Tuesday, March 12 welcoming Cairn University to Brooklyn for a 7 p.m. showdown played at The Hill Center at nearby St. Joseph's University.
