BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Kelsy Padilla (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led three Cannoneers putting away double-digit kills and the Pratt Institute women's volleyball team rallied past Bard, 21-25, 25-22, 26-24, 23-25, 15-7, in non-conference action on Tuesday night at the ARC for the Cannoneers' second straight home victory.
The turning point came in the third set. Down 24-16, Pratt erased eight set points and strung together 10 straight to win it 26-24. Jamie Shoemake (La Crescenta, Calif.) fired four aces in the stretch — including back-to-back serves to put the Cannoneers ahead 25-24 — while Colleen Russell (Asbury, N.J.) added a kill and two blocks and Padilla chipped in the kill that made it 24-23.
Russell powered the attack with 14 kills on .440 hitting, five aces and six total blocks (three solo). Padilla produced 17 kills, two aces and six digs. Shoemake totaled six aces and 14 digs, and setter Eden Shih (Manhattan, N.Y.) handed out 47 assists with two aces and nine digs.
Maggie Hughes (Knoxville, Tenn.) added 10 kills, three aces, 10 digs and five block assists. Joanna Doyle (Warren, N.H.) finished with eight kills and four block assists, and libero Gabriella Prieto (Amityville, N.Y.) posted six digs.
Pratt evened the match with a steady second set, closing 25-22 on a Doyle putaway from a Padilla pass. After Bard leveled the match in the fourth, the Cannoneers raced ahead in the decisive fifth. Russell's service ace and Padilla's back-to-back kills helped build an early cushion, Shih added an ace, and Padilla served another to make it 13-4 before a Bard service error ended it at 15-7.
The Cannoneers (3-12) hit a season-high .267 with 54 kills and stacked up 18 aces and 10 team blocks.
Bard (3-15) was led by Nyla Lawrence (16 kills, two blocks) and Annika Flittie (six kills, six aces, 11 digs). Becca Wintjen and Ninni Ylenius each added five aces.
The Cannoneers return to action Saturday, Oct. 18, hosting Immaculata in an Atlantic East Conference match at 1 p.m. in the ARC.
