Women’s Volleyball Remains Hot, Defeats Baruch For Second Straight Win

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Three Cannoneers put away double-digit kills, three registered double-figure digs and the Pratt Institute women's volleyball team delivered its most complete performance of the season Thursday night, earning a 3-1 victory over Baruch College (25–18, 25–13, 20–25, 25–13) to win its second consecutive match.

Behind a season-high 43 kills and a .218 hitting percentage — also a team best — the Cannoneers (2-10) snapped Baruch's three-match win streak and handed the Bearcats (5-11) just their second loss in their last seven outings.

Junior middle hitter Colleen Russell (Asbury, N.J.) and first-year opposite Maggie Hughes (Knoxville, Tenn.) paced the attack with 12 kills apiece. Russell added three aces and two blocks while Hughes chipped in a team-high 14 digs, five aces and four block assists as part of a dominant all-around effort.

First-year middle hitter Joanna Doyle (Warren, N.H.) added 10 kills on .389 hitting to go along with five total blocks, while first-year setter Eden Shih (Manhattan, N.Y.) dished out 36 assists and added two aces and six digs.

Pratt controlled the first two sets with balanced offense and aggressive serving. After dropping the third, the Cannoneers responded with a commanding fourth set, hitting .440 to put the match away. Pratt posted 13 service aces and eight total team blocks, including five from Hughes and five combined from Doyle and Russell.

First-year Jamie Shoemake (La Crescenta, Calif.) added 11 digs and sophomore Kelsy Padilla (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped 10 digs to aid the defensive effort.

The win marked Pratt's first at home this season and continues a midseason surge following Monday's sweep of Lehman College.

The Cannoneers returns to action Saturday when Pratt travels to Pennsylvania for a to open Atlantic East Conference play at Neumann University, where they will face the host Knights at 10 a.m. followed by a neutral-site non-conference affair with Rutgers-Camden at noon.
