Women's Volleyball Sweeps Saint Elizabeth to Move to 2-0 in Atlantic East Play

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The Pratt Institute women's volleyball team remained unbeaten in Atlantic East Conference play Wednesday night, sweeping Saint Elizabeth University, 25-8, 25-15, 25-18, at the Activity Resource Center.

Pratt (8-8, 2-0 Atlantic East) controlled the opening frame with dominant service runs. Colleen Russell (Asbury, N.J.) delivered three aces during a 5-0 burst to push the lead to 12-4, and Kelsy Padilla (Brooklyn, N.Y.) followed with a 6-0 turn at the line — including two aces — to widen the margin to 19-5. Emma Hwang (Dallas, Texas) then served out the final four points of the 25-8 rout, adding two aces before Alison Sontag (Manhasset, N.Y.) finished it with a kill.

The Cannoneers seized immediate momentum in the second set behind Hwang, who served 10 consecutive points to open the frame with a 10-0 advantage. Saint Elizabeth (2-11, 0-2 Atlantic East) narrowed the gap to 14-8, but Pratt answered with five straight points, featuring kills from Padilla and Joanna Doyle (Warren, N.H.), before closing out the set, 25-15.

The Eagles kept the third set closer, answering an early deficit to pull within two at 15-13. Russell halted the run with a kill, and Padilla took over from the service line, firing four consecutive aces during a 5-0 surge that stretched the cushion to 23-14. Saint Elizabeth fended off four match points before an attack error sealed the sweep, 25-18.

Russell spearheaded the Pratt offense with a match-high 18 kills on 26 swings with just one error, hitting a career-high .654 while adding four service aces. Padilla tallied a match-best and career-high eight aces to go along with eight digs and two kills. Hwang orchestrated the attack with 19 assists, nine digs, five aces, and three kills, while Zoe Broerman (Cincinnati, Ohio) anchored the back row with 15 digs and six assists. Sontag added five kills, two blocks (one solo block and one block assist), and three digs.

Pratt hit a season-best .333 as a team with 33 kills against 10 errors and generated 18 service aces. The Cannoneers limited the Eagles to 17 kills and a .053 hitting percentage.

Dadlyna Louis led Saint Elizabeth with eight kills and four aces, while Marissa Jean Baptiste added six kills and two block assists. Victoria Compton distributed 13 assists for the visitors.

Sitting in a share of first place through two games, Pratt returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 24 welcoming preseason league favorite Marymount University to the ARC. The Cannoneers will also celebrate their Dig Pink game for breast cancer awareness with a first serve set for at 11 a.m.
