Women's Volleyball Falls in Four to Centenary on Senior Night

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The Pratt Institute women's volleyball team celebrated Senior Night for middle hitter Colleen Russell on Wednesday evening, taking a set from conference leader Centenary University before falling in four sets, 25-13, 21-25, 25-13, 25-23, at the Activity Resource Center.

Centenary (9-9, 4-0 Atlantic East) set the tone in the opening frame, racing out to a 5-0 advantage and later using a six-point run to widen the gap to 12-3. Pratt (8-10, 2-2 Atlantic East) answered with four straight points, getting an ace from Eleanor Peck (Andover, Mass.) to pull within 12-7, but the Cyclones maintained control to take the set, 25-13.

The Cannoneers responded in the second set, trading leads before breaking a 10-10 tie with three consecutive service aces from Emma Hwang (Dallas, Texas) to seize a 13-10 cushion. Alison Sontag (Manhasset, N.Y.) followed with an ace of her own, and Zoe Broerman (Cincinnati, Ohio) added an ace to keep Pratt in front at 20-16. Kills from Jamie Shoemake (La Crescenta, Calif.) brought Pratt to set point at 24-21, and Joanna Doyle (Warren, N.H.) delivered a solo block to close out the 25-21 victory and level the match.

The Cyclones answered by taking the third frame, opening with a 5-1 surge and using a five-point run to push the score to 17-7. Shoemake and Kelsy Padilla (Brooklyn, N.Y.) provided kills for the Cannoneers, but Centenary finished off the set, 25-13.

The fourth set featured eight ties as the teams battled down to the wire. Centenary broke a 12-12 deadlock with four unanswered and stretched its lead to 21-14. Pratt mounted a furious late charge, ripping off four straight points behind Broerman's serving to pull within 21-18, and later trimmed the deficit to 22-21 on consecutive kills from Sontag and Russell (Asbury, N.J.). Facing match point at 24-21, Pratt erased two straight match points on a Sontag kill and a Cyclones attack error to pull within 24-23 before Centenary secured the final point to take the match, 25-23.

Russell tallied seven kills, eight digs, and two block assists in front of a spirited crowd. Shoemake contributed five kills and two digs, while Sontag and Padilla added four kills apiece, with Padilla collecting a team-high 13 digs. Hwang orchestrated the attack with 18 assists, five aces, and four digs, and Broerman recorded seven digs and three aces.

Pratt finished with 22 kills and 11 service aces while picking up 43 digs and three total blocks.
