ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. — The Pratt Institute women's volleyball team dropped a pair of non-conference matches Saturday at the Stevenson Athletic Center, falling 25-16, 18-25, 25-17, 25-15 to The City College of New York before yielding to host Bard College in straight sets, 25-19, 25-17, 25-14.
In the opening match against future conference foe CCNY (5-10), the Beavers took the first set behind a seven-point service run from Lesly Almonte to build a 10-4 lead on the way to a 25-16 win. Pratt (5-6) responded with a clean offensive performance in the second frame, hitting .476 with 10 kills and no errors on 21 attacks. Ahead 10-8, the Cannoneers used a five-point run served by Zoe Broerman (Cincinnati, Ohio) to seize a 15-8 advantage and leveled the match with a 25-18 victory.
The Beavers regained control in the third, breaking a 10-10 tie with four straight points before pulling away for a 25-17 win. In the fourth, CCNY opened on a 17-4 surge. Angelina Chung (Brooklyn, N.Y.) served three aces during a 5-0 Pratt run to pull the Cannoneers within 18-10, but the Beavers closed out the four-set decision, 25-15.
Against host Bard (4-13), Pratt trailed 11-4 in the opening set before mounting a 5-1 charge behind a kill from Jamie Shoemake (La Crescenta, Calif.) to pull within 12-9, eventually closing the gap to 14-13 on a block by Colleen Russell (Asbury, N.J.). The Raptors answered with a 6-0 run to build a 20-13 cushion before closing the set, 25-19. Bard then led wire-to-wire in the final two frames, taking early leads of 9-3 in the second and 19-10 in the third to complete the 25-17, 25-14 sweep.
Russell paced the Cannoneers on the afternoon with 18 total kills, collecting 11 kills against CCNY and seven against Bard to go along with 11 digs. Emma Hwang (Dallas, Texas) handed out 38 total assists, including 22 against the Beavers. Alison Sontag (Manhasset, N.Y.) hit .308 with seven kills and three aces against CCNY, while Kelsy Padilla (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 10 kills and two aces on the day. Broerman anchored the defense with 25 total digs.
Almonte and Rachael Reyes each tallied nine kills to lead CCNY. For Bard, Nala Roman recorded a match-high 10 kills, while Fernanda Julian dished out 16 assists.
Pratt returns home and looks to remain perfect at the ARC on Monday, October 5 hosting St. Joseph's University, Long Island for a 7 p.m. non-conference match.
