Women’s Tennis Remain Perfect, Defeats Marywood in Spring Home Opener

QUEENS, N.Y. — The Pratt Institute women's tennis team secured its fourth consecutive 7-0 sweep, rolling past Marywood University on Thursday afternoon at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

The Cannoneers (8-0, 3-0 AEC) established control early by dominating doubles play. First-years Judith Song (Sharon, Mass.) and Olivia Tao (Ann Arbor, Mich.) struck first, delivering a 6-0 shutout at the No. 2 position. Junior Pallavi Verghese (Fayetteville, Ark.) and senior Srishti Agarwal (Gurugram, India) quickly followed, clinching the doubles point with a 6-1 victory at No. 1.

Junior Satoka Shibasaki (Tokyo, Japan) and first-year Quinn Steinman (Greendale, Wis.) completed the doubles sweep with a steady 6-2 result at No. 3.

Pratt carried that momentum into singles action, winning all six flights in straight sets and never dropping more than three games in a single set. Verghese was the first to finish, handling the lead match with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph. Reigning Atlantic East Player of the Week Agarwal followed closely behind, dispatching her opponent 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot.

Song provided the match-clinching point for the black-and-gold at No. 3 singles, securing a 6-0, 6-3 victory.

The bottom half of the lineup kept the pressure on to finalize the sweep. First-year Sophia Schafler (West Palm Beach, Fla.) cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6. Tao added a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 5, before Shibasaki closed out the afternoon with a 6-0, 6-3 result at the No. 4 spot.

Pratt will looks to build on its eight-match win streak taking a break from Atlantic East play, hosting Baruch College in a non-conference match on April 11 at 4 pm at the USTA National Tennis Center.
