NEW YORK — A late second-half goal snapped a scoreless deadlock as the Pratt Institute women's soccer team fell 1-0 to future conference foe The City College of New York on Monday night at Randall's Island Field 10.
Senior goalkeeper Savannah Depaz (Chapel Hill, N.C.) stopped 11 shots to keep the match level into the closing minutes, but CCNY (2-4-0) broke through on a corner kick in the 83rd minute to snap Pratt's (4-2-0) three-game shutout and winning streak.
The two sides played through more than 82 scoreless minutes before the Beavers finally found the net. Following an 82nd-minute corner kick by CCNY's Sara Rodriguez, Zherlyn Guaillazaca converted from close range at 82:12 for the lone tally of the contest.
Pratt generated opportunities throughout both halves but was repeatedly turned aside by the woodwork and opposing goalkeepers. Senior midfielder Emma Pratt (North Attleboro, Mass.) struck the post in the 23rd minute and again in the 72nd minute, finishing with a team-high seven shots and three on goal.
The Cannoneers pressed early in the second half, putting three shots on target in the opening 16 minutes after intermission. Junior forward Kate Nolan (Perth, Australia) and sophomore forward Chloe Tien (Broomfield, Colo.) each had attempts stopped in the first two minutes of the period.
Named Atlantic East Defensive Player of the Week earlier today, Depaz kept the black-and-gold in contention with five saves in the opening half and six more after the break, matching her career-high 11 from four games prior.Â
For the Beavers, Pamela Pineda led all players with eight shots and placed five on target. Goalkeeper Elsa Gashi stopped four shots in the first half before Jade Salas recorded three saves in the second half to complete the combined shutout.
CCNY finished with a 21-14 advantage in total shots, including a 12-7 edge in shots on goal, and earned four corner kicks to three for Pratt.
Pratt returns to Randall's Island to face another future conference foe in John Jay College of Criminal Justice on Saturday, September 26. Kickoff from Field 74 is set for 11:30 a.m.
