Houghton, Burch, Cannoneers serve Cooper Union quick 3-0 loss

BROOKLYN -- Pratt Institute crushed 22 service aces, including nine by sophomore Alli Houghton (Allentown, PA) and eight by freshman Charlotte Burch (Lawrence, KS), as the Cannoneers took an even one hour in a 3-0 win (25-3, 25-16, 25-9) over visiting Cooper Union Wednesday night in non-confernece women's volleyball play.

Burch fired an amazing seven service aces during a 12-1 Pratt run that broke open the first set, giving the Cannoneers a 13-1 lead in the team's 25-3 rout. A pair of Alexa Orrico aces brought Cooper to within 8-6 to start the second set before Houghton and Diana Lezama (Bethesda, MD) aces sparked a 9-1 Pratt run in the Cannoneers 25-16 Game 2 win.

Houghton's hot hand was the difference in a quick third set. With the Black & Gold clinging to an 11-9 lead, the sophomore served over eight aces in a 14-0 run to close out a 25-9 win the straight-set triumph.

She added a match-best 10 set assists, hitting double figures for a second straight match, and senior Nicole Garcia (Bogota, Columbia) lead all players with six kills on 14 attempts and a .417 attack percentage. Burch added a pair of solo blocks and a block assist as Pratt improved to 2-0.

Cooper, which hit a -.349 as a team, fell to 0-1.

At 1-0 in Hudson Valley play, the Cannoneers return to league action on Saturday, traveling to Culinary at 1:00 p.m.
