BROOKLYN – Vaughn College turned a 19-13 contest into a 23-point halftime lead by closing the first half on a 20-4 run in a 74-37 win over the host Cannoneers in Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball play Thursday night at the Pratt ARC.
An 11-4 Pratt run midway through the first half capped by Carol Cai and Hannah Calderwood layups pulled Pratt to within 19-13 after the Warriors opened the game leading 15-2. Starting with a Maia Rivers free throw at the 7:03 mark, Vaughn closed the half on a 20-4 run, going into halftime leading 43-20.
The Cannoneers shot just 1-11 from the free throw line and 29 percent overall for the frame. The Warriors, meanwhile, converted 39 percent from the floor led by 8-13 shooting for Rivers, who led all players with 19 points through halftime.
Vaughn capped an early second-half 10-0 run with a Ciarra Peterson three-pointer that put the visitors on top 59-22. The Warriors held Pratt to 24 percent shooting in the frame, going on to win 74-37.
Peterson led all players with 26 points, taking 35 shots in getting there, while Rivers added 25 on 11-17 shooting. Aisha Dunlap totaled a double-double of 18 points on 9-16 shooting to go along with 12 rebounds as Vaughn improved to 3-1 (1-0 HVIAC).
Pratt (0-3, 0-3 HVIAC) was led by Carol Cai with 17 points, and Hannah Calderwood added eight points and a team-high 13 rebounds. Natali Basoski scored a season-best six points and grabbed six boards, and guard Sophie Erb corralled a season-high 10 rebounds in the loss.
