Cannoneers dismantle Cooper Union, improve to 4-0

BROOKLYN -- A double-double of 14 set assists and 10 service aces from sophomore Alli Houghton led undefeated Pratt's 3-0 win over Cooper Union Friday night in non-conference women's volleyball action at the Pratt ARC.

As a team, the Cannoneers hit a season-high .433, making only four errors on 17 kills over 30 swings. The team's 34 aces were also a season best as Pratt won for the fourth time in four matches, all by the count of 3-0.

Back-to-back aces from senior Diana Lezama put Pratt ahead 13-5 to open the night, and consecutive kills from Hannah Calderwood led to a Cooper Union timeout with the score 20-6. One of the middle hitter's three aces was followed by one of fellow sophomore Joan Wyeth's four in closing out Pratt's 25-8 Game 1 win.

Consecutive aces from junior Nicole Teitel sent Pratt in front 8-2 to open the second set, and three from freshman Abby Nagy extended the lead to 19-3. One of Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week Alice Vicente's game-best five kills followed by another Calderwood ace wrapped up Pratt's 25-6 win in Game 2.

The final set belonged to Houghton from the outset, with the setter firing nine aces in a 10-0 run to open the frame. A trio of aces from Vicente, who entered the night as the HVIAC leader in aces per set, upped the margin to 14-1 as Pratt ran away by the score of 25-3.

The double-double is the first for Houghton in 2014, the second for a Cannoneer on the season and falls one ace short of a career high -- the setter totaled 11 in a 3-2 win over Pine Manor last September. Seven Cannoneers collected three or more aces, five firing four or more.

At 4-0, Pratt remains at home, playing host to Yeshiva University on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
