Scorching third set sends Pratt to 3-0 sweep over Purchase

PURCHASE, NY -- The Cannoneers hit a blistering-hot .611 as a team in the third set in Pratt Institute's 3-0 win at Purchase College Thursday night in non-conference women's volleyball play.

Junior Rachel Goatley tied for match-high honors with eight kills, hitting .400 on the attack, and freshman Julia Kubak followed with seven kills and a match- and career-best .545 attack percentage. Senior Charlotte Burch and Patricia Morales added six kills each, a career high for the freshman, as Pratt improved to 9-6.

In addition to hitting .310 as a team and holding Purchase to a .000 attack, the Cannoneers fired 15 aces, limiting to Purchase to only three. Kubak led all players with six aces and Burch added five.

The Panthers crawled to within 10-9 with a 4-0 run in Game 1, but three kills from Kubak and two from Goatley sparked a 7-0 run that put Pratt on top 17-9. An 8-1 Purchase run again found the hosts down one, at 18-17, before Kubak and Goatley kills provided breathing room, and Hannah Calderwood's kill capped a 25-22 victory.

The Cannoneers trailed early in Game 2 before Goatley's kill tied the set at 8-8.  An 8-1 run highlighted by an Abby Nagy ace and two from Kubak sparked a 7-1 run that distanced Pratt in its 25-16 win.

A pair of Deniz Aysay service aces ignited a 5-0 Cannoneers run early in the third set. From there, three Morales kills and a pair of Kubak aces highlighted a 12-0 Pratt run, as the Cannoneers cruised 25-6. On the set, Pratt totaled 11 kills with only one error on 18 attacks, good for a .611 kill percentage.

Senior Joan Wyeth led Pratt with seven digs on the match, while Nagy's 20 set assists led all players.

The Cannoneers round out HVIAC play this weekend taking on Davis College at 1:00 p.m. and the College of New Rochelle at 3:00 at the Davis tri-match.
