NEW YORK – The Pratt Institute men's soccer team notched their first win of the season defeating borough foes Medgar Evers College, 3-1, on Monday afternoon.
Theo Goldman scored a goal and an assist to lead Pratt (1-9-2) and Spencer Giuliano and Diego Pina de la Hoz both found the back of the net in the victory – their first goals of the season and Pina de la Hoz's first of his collegiate career.
Pratt drew first blood in the 10th minute when Giuliano took a feed from Goldman and fired a shot that found the back of the net through traffic. Five minutes later, Diego Pina de la Hoz drew a foul inside the box for a penalty kick, which he successfully converted for a 2-0 lead and the eventual game-winner.
Goldman scored just before the end of the first half and the Cannoneers led 3-0 at the break also holding an 8-3 shot advantage.
The Cougars (0-13-0) pressed in the second stanza looking to get back into the game and held a 13-4 shot advantage and saw three shots hit the post or crossbar. Medgar finally broke through in the final seconds of regulation earning a penalty kick, with Daniel Hacket putting it away to spoil the clean sheet.
Dimitrios Papagiannakopoulos made five saves in 85 scoreless minutes in goal.
Medgar Evers ended up with a 16-12 advantage in shots, but Pratt finished with an 8-7 edge in shots on goal. The Cannoneers also held a 7-1 discrepancy in corners.
