LANGHORNE, Pa. – Kylie Grant led three Cannoneers scoring in double figures with 14 points and seven assists and the Pratt Institiute women's basketball team trailed by six at halftime but couldn't keep pace with Cairn University in the second half in a 83-53 defeat on Friday evening on day one of the Highlander Classic.
First-year Anabela Jakelic registered a 12-point, 14-rebound double-double with two blocks off the bench in her first collegiate game. Classmate Niya Witherwpoon flirted with a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds. Victoria Carajal netted nine points and four dimes and Emily Carlson chipped in eight points with six boards.
Neither team could pull ahead by more than three points in the first quarter before the Highlanders (1-1) scored six straight to build a 20-13 lead. The Cannoneers (0-2) scored six straight spanning the first intermission to pulled back within one at 20-19, two minutes into the second quarter. The hosts tried to pull away, but Pratt remained within reach trailing 29-23 at halftime.
Despite improving their shooting to 45 percent after the break, the Cannoneers came out of the gate slow in the third and the Highlanders quickly gained a double-digit lead where it remained the rest of the way, outscoring Pratt 27-10 in the period.
Taylor Hinson led all scorers with a 27-point, 11-rebound double-double, scoring 18 of her points in the second half.
Pratt will conclude their trip at the Highlander Classic with a matchup against Bryn Athyn College tomorrow at 1 p.m.
