LANGHORNE, Pa. – Kylie Grant scored a game-high 29 points and the Cannoneers had nearly three double-doubles but the Pratt Institute women's basketball team was turned away from the Highlander Classic with an 87-72 defeat to Bryn Athyn College on Saturday afternoon.
Grant shot 10-of-19 from the field and 8-for-12 from the free throw line and stuffed the stat sheet with four assists, four steals and three rebounds. First-years Niya Witherspoon and Emily Carlson both turned in double-double efforts with Witherspoon going for 15 points and 10 rebounds and Carlson netting 11 points with as many boards, also dishing out three assists to go along with four rejections and two steals on the defensive end. Fellow rookie Anabela Jakelic fell one point shy of a double-double scoring nine points and pulling down a game-best 13 caroms.
The teams traded the lead several times in the first before the Lions (1-1) ran off a 17-2 run for a 22-9 lead with one minute left in the first. But Pratt (0-3) responded with a 9-0 run of their own spanning the two periods and shrank the deficit to four, 22-18. It remained a single-digit ball game for much of the second stanza, but Bryn Athyn closed the half on a 9-0 run and extended their lead to 45-30 headed into the lockers.
The Lions extended their lead with a 28-18 third quarter, but the Cannoneers fought until the final buzzer and won the fourth quarter, 24-14, on 53 percent shooting (8-for-15) behind eight points from Grant and six points each from Witherspoon and Victoria Carvajal.
Both squads shot nearly identical with Pratt connecting on 42.1 percent and Bryn Athyn hitting on 42.9 percent, but making 12 more field goals. The Cannoneers made 12 more free throws and shot 21-of-29 from the charity stripe. Pratt also won the battle of the boards 48-43.
Pratt will host their home opener on Wednesday, November 15 against Hunter College with a 6 p.m. tip off at the ARC.
