BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Pratt Institute women's basketball team opened their 2023-24 campaign with a Clinton Hill rivals St. Joseph's University Brooklyn on Wednesday evening at The Hill Center. Despite a pair of double-doubles from first-year Emily Carlson and junior Kylie Grant, the Cannoneers made the trip back down Willoughby Ave with a 70-55 defeat.
Carlson posted a 21-point, 13-rebound double-double in her first collegiate game. Grant joined her with a 15-point, 13-rebound double-double, also swiping three steals. First-year Victoria Carvajal rounded out three in double figures with 14 points, four assists and two boards.
Pratt whittled an 11-point first-quarter deficit to five before the Bears scored seven straight and finished on a 7-2 run for a 23-13 lead at the first break and the hosts expanded the lead to 20 at the intermission.
The Cannoners got back into the game with a strong third quarter winning the period 19-13 and closing the period on a 7-0 run to bring the game to single digits, 53-45, at the final break. The black-and-gold got as close as seven on two occasions and as late as 4:41 to play, but an 8-0 St. Joseph's run over the next two minutes distanced the Bears.
Destiny Hurt led St. Joseph's with a 24-point, 10-rebound double-double and Kristen Donovan added 22 points.
Pratt has a day off before heading to the Highlander Classic facing host Cairn University on Friday, November 10 at 8 p.m.
