BRONX, N.Y. – The Pratt Institute men's tennis team defeated Lehman College, 8-1, on Friday afternoon on the road in their first match of 2023.
Pratt (2-1) led 2-1 after the doubles session with Caleb Callahan and Johnny Xie teaming up for an 8-3 win in the No. 2 position and Brian Duval and Thomas Klebe prevailing in a tiebreaker 8-7 (6) at No. 3. Ryan Nelsen and Ian Zhang dropped a hard-fought decision in the lead match, 8-6.
The black-and-gold coasted through the singles portion taking all but one match in straight sets. Xie scooped up the first point with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4, and Nelsen taking the top singles match dropping just two games, 6-1, 6-1.
Duval clinched the match with a 6-2, 7-6 (3) win at No. 5 with Callahan prevailing at No. 2, 6-4, 6-4, and Thomas Van Trier cruising at No. 6, 6-0, 6-0. Zhang was put to the test at No. 3 singles, but outlasted his opponent in a super-tiebreaker, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 1-0 (5), to sweep the singles session.
Pratt travels to Bronxville, N.Y. to face Sarah Lawrence College on Sunday, March 26 starting at noon.
