WASHINGTON – The Pratt Institute women's volleyball team suffered a pair of straight-set setbacks to Cedar Crest College and Arcadia University to wrap up their trip to the nation's capital competing at the 2023 Worthington Classic hosted by Gallaudet University.
The Cannoneers concluded pool play with a morning matchup against Cedar Crest (5-7). Zeynep Akgol led Pratt with eight kills and seven digs and Olivia Julich had five kills with two blocks but it wasn't enough to keep pace with the Falcons who combined for 41 kills and .333 hitting to take the match 25-19, 25-19, 25-17.
In the seventh-place game against Arcadia (2-9), Emily Sontag served up five aces to go along with three kills and Akgol put away six kills on .357 hitting with three blocks. Gabby Genduso recorded a 16-assist, 13-dig double-double and Genduso, Julich, and Josie Johnson chipped in five kills apiece. Arcadia withstood a late surge by the gold-and-black to prevail 25-16, 25-18, 25-22.
Pratt fought hard in a third stanza that saw nine ties and four lead changes and the teams separated by three or fewer points nearly the entire set. A Colleen Russell kill pulled the Cannoneers within one at 23-22 but couldn't overtake the Knights to force an extra set.
Pratt (3-6) returns to the ARC to host John Jay College on Wednesday, September 27 at 7 p.m.
