Women’s Tennis Improves to 10-0 Stopping Stockton, 5-4

FLUSHING, N.Y. — The Pratt Institute women's tennis team remained perfect on the season edging out Stockton University, 5-4, on Sunday afternoon at the USTA National Tennis Center. It is the first known time dating back to 2012-13 to open the season at 10-0 and the fourth time to reach the 10-win mark first since the 2018-19 season.

Pallavi Verghese and Beatrice Crespo both were victorious at singles and doubles at the top of the lineup to contribute two points each.

Verghese and Crespo teamed up in the lead doubles match and Nastazja Cancellaro and Julia Ognibene joined at No. 3 doubles, both tandems recording 8-5 victories that gave Pratt a 2-1 lead after the doubles session. Ariana Castro and Srishti Agarwal both played a hard-fought match at No. 2 doubles but fell in a tiebreak, 8-7 (2).

In the singles session, Castro closed out her No. 4 match, 6-0, 6-2 and Crespo followed with a 6-4, 6-0 win in the No. 2 position to give Pratt a 4-1 lead. Verghese delivered the clinching point with a 6-2, 6-2 win in the lead match.

The Osprey (5-3) took the final three matches in close battles. Cancellaro fell at No. 5 singles in a pair of tiebreakers, 7-6 (2), 7-5 (5). Agarwal succumbed in a third-set supertiebreaker at No. 3, 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7), in the final match of the day.

Pratt will try to finish the regular season at 11-0 next Saturday, April 20 in a home match against an opponent to be named later.
