Women’s Tennis Defeats Baruch to Improve to 9-0

FLUSHING, N.Y. — The Pratt Insitute women's tennis team grinded out a 6-3 victory over Baruch College on Sunday afternoon at the USTA National Tennis Center to remain unbeaten on the season.

Pratt (9-0) led 2-1 after the doubles session with Pallavi Verghese and Beatrice Crespo winning in a tiebreaker in the lead match, 8-7 (7-5). Nastazja Cancellaro and Julia Ognibene teamed up for an 8-4 victory at the No. 3 spot.

The match remained up for grabs in a very close singles session. Cancellaro scored a straight-set win at the No. 5 position, 6-4, 6-1. Ariana Castro rallied after dropping her opening set at No. 4 singles to win in a super-tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-4). Shortly after Castro closed out her match, Srishti Agarwal clinched the overall victory with a 7-5, 6-3 triumph at No. 3 singles, handing Baruch (12-2) just their second loss of the season.

In the lead match, Verghese also battled back to win in a tightly-contested supertiebreaker in the final match of the day on the grandstand court, winning 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (15-13).

Pratt hosts Stockon University next Sunday, April 14 at the National Tennis Center starting at 1 p.m.
