BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The Pratt Institute women's basketball team fell 87-40 to St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn on Friday at The Hill Center in the opener of the St. Joseph's Tip-Off Classic.
The Clinton Hill rivals used a fast start to seize control, sprinting to a 32-13 lead after the first quarter behind pressure defense and transition scoring. The Cannoneers steadied in the second as Emily Carlson (Utica, N.Y.) buried a 3-pointer to open the frame and Miga Higa (Torrance, Calif.) added four free throws in a 14-point period, but the hosts kept the margin in double figures the rest of the way.
Pratt (1-2) was led by first-year forward Lola Mactavish (Sydney, Australia), who scored 10 points with two assists and a 5-for-10 effort at the line. Sophomore forward Anabela Jakelic (Zagreb, Croatia) posted a near double-double with nine points, nine rebounds and three blocks, and Higa finished with nine points and three steals. Carlson added four points, 13 rebounds, two steals and two blocks, while first-year forward Dahlia Dimitrov (Montreal, Canada) chipped in six points and five boards.
The black-and-gold protected the rim with five blocks and won 36 defensive rebounds, but 37 turnovers proved costly. St. Joseph's turned those miscues into 32 points and delivered 43 points off the bench.
St. Joseph's (3-0) remained unbeaten on the young season, paced by Jasmine Chan-Clayton's 14 points (4 3-pointers). Kristen Donovan added 12 points and six steals, and Mercedes Perez totaled 12 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Pratt makes the short trip down Willoughby Avenue back to The Hill Center on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 1 p.m. to face St. Joseph's University-Long Island.
