ARLINGTON, Va. — The Pratt Institute women's tennis team edged out defending Atlantic East Conference champion Marymount University, 4-3, on Saturday in a hard-fought league win.
The Cannoneers (9-2, 2-0) secured its second-straight conference victory after overcoming an early deficit following doubles play at Virginia Highlands Park.
Marymount (2-4, 0-1) got off to a strong start by capturing two of the three doubles matches. Pratt initially took the lead as Victoria Delgado and Julia Ognibene stormed to a 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles. The Saints quickly bounced back, claiming the next two doubles matches to secure the doubles point.
Trailing 1-0 going into singles play, Pratt responded emphatically and took four out of six matches to clinch the overall victory.
Beatrice Crespo provided early momentum in singles by dominating her match at third singles to win at love. Marymount then regained the lead by winning first and second singles – Kayla Abraham suffering her first dual match singles loss of the season in the lead position.
The Cannoneers battled back as Ognibene pulled out a critical win at No. 4 singles, 7-6 (1), 6-1. Delgado also delivered her second win of the day at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-0, setting up Alice Li to clinch the match. Li secured the victory convincingly at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-1.
Pratt returns to the courts on Saturday, April 5 and welcomes Immaculata University to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center for a noon conference match.
