PATCHOGUE, N.Y. — The Pratt Institute women's volleyball team battled through a challenging Saturday doubleheader, coming up short in straight sets against two strong opponents — Emmanuel College (MA) and host St. Joseph's University (Long Island) – at the John A. Danzi Center.
In the morning matchup, Pratt took on an Emmanuel squad who entered with a 13-1 record. Despite the result, key moments of sharp play emerged during the contest. Junior middle hitter Colleen Russell led the team with five kills, while Anabela Jakelic added four kills and two solo blocks. Sophomore Kelsy Padilla recorded a service ace and two kills as the team settled into rhythm throughout the day's opening match.
Against St. Joseph's (L.I.) in the afternoon, Pratt showed improved tempo and attacking efficiency, increasing their team hitting percentage across each set. Russell again led the way with six kills, and the Cannonneers had a balanced attack with Jakelic, first-year outside hitter Jamie Shoemake, and Padilla putting down four kills each. First-year setter Eden Shih dished out 11 assists, matching her total from the opening match.
Pratt travels to borough rivals Brooklyn College on Tuesday, September 30 for a 7 p.m. non-conference test.
