BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The Pratt Institute men's volleyball team opened its 2026 season on Tuesday night, falling to Brooklyn College in straight sets, 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-20), at the Activity Resource Center.
Pratt (0-1) showed resilience throughout the non-conference contest, while Brooklyn (1-0) started its campaign in the win column.
Senior Griffin Benkovszky (Ashland, Va.) paced the Cannoneers with a team-high seven kills and added seven digs. In the middle, Morvens Regis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Micah-Jude Upshaw (Baltimore, Md.) provided an efficient offensive spark, each putting down five kills while hitting .500 and .571, respectively.
Nathan Kim (Irvine, Calif.) directed the offense with 17 assists to go along with five digs. Senior Max Wang (Shenzhen, China) contributed on both sides of the ball with seven digs, three kills, and a service ace. First-year Arturo Mata (Chicago, Ill.) led the team from the service line with two aces.
The Cannoneers showed their fight in a competitive second set. Trailing 9-5, Pratt stormed back with a 5-0 run on Mata's serve, which included an ace, to take a brief 10-9 lead. The teams battled from there, but a late 4-0 spurt from the visitors proved to be the difference. In the third frame, the Cannoneers again clawed back, using a 3-0 run with Wang at the service line to pull within one at 12-11 before Brooklyn managed to seal the match.
Brooklyn was led by a 10-kill, eight-dig performance from Joaquin Calderon. Aaron Siu added nine kills and two aces, while setter Miguel Trejo distributed 28 assists for the Bulldogs.
The Cannoneers return to the ARC on Friday, Jan. 23, to host Sarah Lawrence College in the second match of a season-opening three-game homestand. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
